About these guides

Moviella is built around one idea: one ticket, every cinema. These guides are the companion to that idea. They explain where cinema came from, how films are made, and what the formats on your ticket actually mean, so you can choose your next screening with confidence.

How we write these guides

• Facts come from film archives, festival and academy records, technical standards bodies and long-established film histories. Where a number is uncertain we leave it out.
• Images are public-domain early film material, cameras, projectors and cinema buildings from Wikimedia Commons. We do not use modern movie stills, posters or studio logos.
• We describe films, people and countries neutrally. Our focus is the craft and history of cinema.
